From NY to DC nightlife, but he didn’t have to take the Chinatown bus… George Garcia arrived at GWU in 2006 on the back of a business degree, a pair of cleats and a mixer. He took no time in diving into the local house circuit, spinning at K Street Lounge, Eyebar, Lotus, Five and Indebleu.

Within two years he found himself running parallel with those Chinatown buses, working residencies in NY at Azza Lounge and D’or as well as spinning here in The District. It was around that time he hung up the cleats and let the bass take over.

2009 saw George spinning everything from a Playboy fashion show to a US Tennis Association after party. He spun celebrity parties for everyone; Wimer Valderamma to Wu-Tang; Sean Kingston to Ovi.

His style? Tribal house with a flare for pop. His latest ‘oE Summer Prescription’ mix contains tracks by Swedish House Mafia, Afrojack, Avicii, David Guetta, Yves LaRock, Steve Aoki and more!

From: USA (NY, NY)

Style: house

Best Known For: Spinning for the stars

The son of famous toy manufacturer Russell Berrie, David grew up with the opportunity to do anything he wanted… including nothing. He took piano and violin lessons early on, eventually landing at something a bit cooler, turntables.

Inspired by NY icons like Louie Vega, Danny T, A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul; by 16 Berrie had honed his skills and was sneaking out of the house to spin at small clubs in Manhattan. From there it was cake.

Been There, Done That: Having performed events for Diddy, Giselle, GQ and Esquire, Berrie’s inner talent eventually came bursting out. With all that instrumental training and all that NY influence, it was only a matter of time before he traded the posh VIP scene for the infectious, let it all hang out world of electronic dance music.

He certainly has our signature!

{tab=Bio}
David Berrie has played innumerable bold-face-name parties for the likes of Diddy, Kanye West, 50 Cent, Gisele Bundchen, and Pharrell Williams. He’s a staple at the most exclusive nightclubs around the world. Top promoters and music aficionados across the globe seek him out. It’s nice work if you can get it, but for David Berrie none of it truly matters.

“I know it sounds corny,” David Berrie says, “but what really matters to me is making great music—music that reaches people, music with integrity, music that makes people dance.” The unassuming 24-year old goes on to cite a constellation of luminary DJs who have inspired him early on: Carl Cox, Louie Vega, and Danny Tenaglia. Which begs the question, what gives this young, talented upstart the nerve to name-check such DJ royalty in conjunction with himself? Hard work and talent.

David Berrie wasn’t born with a silver slipmat on his 1200s. His mother, a Korean immigrant, and his father, the son of Bronx-based Russian immigrants, settled in Englewood, NJ. His dad was the marketing genius behind those ubiquitous Troll dolls. His parents made him study classical piano and violin years before he got his decks. He reached that milestone at the tender age of 13 with two Technics and a used Vestax mixer.

“My older sister originally turned me onto hip-hop,” David Berrie explains. “I got really into golden-era late-80s and early-90s Native Tongues stuff — A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Brand Nubian and other artists like KRS-One, EPMD, and Rakim.” His love of music and his enterprising ways found full expression in his thriving junior high school business making CD mixes for classmates. “It was my first experience curating music,” he says. “It was going great, until the principle called me into his office…”

As hip-hop in the late-90s became increasingly commercialized, David Berrie found refuge in the underground. “I started deeper and deeper into the dance scene,” he explains. “I started discovering DJs like Danny Krivit and Frankie Knuckles, and Larry Levan. I began loading up on classics from Fat Beats and Satellite Records.”

At 16, after endless hours spent in his basement, this self-taught DJ landed his first paying club gig in NYC from a handed over promo cd. At the time, David was sneaking out on buses to shuttle to his gigs. From then on David’s aspirations and masterful skills quickly took him from small rooms to the country’s most high-profile nightclubs including Tao Las Vegas, Webster Hall New York, and Liv Miami.

Soon he became the go-to DJ for international high-profile parties playing for luxury brands like GQ and Vogue and traveling to London, France, Italy, Spain, Mexico, and Croatia. Though he doesn’t like to talk about it, David’s style didn’t go unnoticed; US Weekly recently named him one of “The 25 Most Stylish New Yorkers.”

Most recently, David Berrie has been recording original tracks. President and CEO of dance music mega-label Ultra Records, only needed to hear one of David’s tracks to sign him. This summer single “Take a minute” is due for release in August 2010.{tab=Video}

From: France

Style: Anything funky that kicks ass

Famous Tracks: Hello (feat. Dragonette), One 2.3 Four, C’est La Vie

Best Known For: Being a French icon. A deadly overhead smash.

DJ Mag Rank: 55

Martin Solveig is definitely one of the more intriguing characters in the DJ world. One listen to his production style and a look at his music videos says it all. The guy’s got a certain panache about him unmatched by most.

His level in the DJ hierarchy is one many hope to reach and few will ever achieve. He has worked closely with superstar fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier on numerous projects. He mentioned once that his favorite artist was Prince, the next thing he new, Prince’s camp was making remix requests.

Check out his TV episode feat. ‘Hello.’ It’s got cameos from Bob Sinclar and superstar tennis icons Novak Djokovic and Gael Monfils!

Clearly Marty gets love. The night he arrives at Lima Lounge will be one for the ages. Few DJs with the staggering amount of YouTube views he has spin at venue as intimate as Lima. How lucky are we? Well, we are Glow, so very lucky.
{tab=Bio}
2009 couldn’t have gone much better for Martin Solveig who has long been synonymous with forward-thinking electronic music for over a decade. Fresher than ever, the Frenchman’s whirlwind year has seen him adorned by his homeland as well as re-establishing himself as an electro-pop icon, not to mention breaking into the top 50 of DJ Mag’s prestigious Top 100 poll.

Awarded the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres for his contribution to the arts in his homeland and across the world, appreciation for Solveig’s work is greater than ever, having also scooped the Artiste de Musiques Electroniques de l’Année at the French Victoires de la Musique last year.

Musically, Martin has remained at the forefront of the medium he adores; maturing like a fine French wine, Solveig’s irrepressible touch has coined successive hits from his latest album ‘C’est la Vie’, released in June 2008. ‘C’est la Vie’, ‘I Want You’ and ‘One 2.3 Four’ haven taken the airwaves by storm and demonstrated Martin’s primed production skills and electric approach – note, interestingly The Strokes was the key inspiration for making the album.

2009 and the masterfully engineered electro-pop powerhouse ‘Boys & Girls’ started life following a chance meeting between Martin and ‘fashionista’ Jean-Paul Gaultier. A shared admiration for each other’s work gave birth to the track that’s video, shot at Gaultier’s ‘Maison de Couture’, has gone on to amass over one million hits on Youtube. Bowing to public demand, a full release was scheduled globally featuring remixes from Laiback Luke, Les Petits Pilous, Bart B. More and David E. Sugar.
‘Boys & Girls’ featured on the ‘C’est la Vie Remixes’ album that was released for free across Europe through publications as a thank you to fans from Martin. A genuine gesture from the humble Parisian who enlisted some of his favourite producers to work on the alternative version of the album, including Fedde Le Grand, Laidback Luke and Felix Da Housecat, among others.

With over ten years in the industry under his belt, the French maestro continues to ‘woo’ audiences around the world and he has the awards to prove it. Relentlessly keeping one step ahead of the game, with ‘Boys & Girls’ still bubbling successfully and Martin back in the studio, 2010 looks set for Solveig to step up once again… but hey… what do you expect from the irrepressible, formidable Frenchman.

From: USA (Miami)

Style: Progressive Trance

Famous Tracks: Falling Backwards, True Love, The Reaper

Best Known For: Being a legend. Residing at Miami’s infamous Shadow Lounge at its height.

George Acosta was the first artist ever booked at Glow. He continued to be Glow’s biggest draw for over 5 years, outselling the current giants. His impact on trance is unparalleled. Whether it’s progressive, melodic, uplifting, techy, fast, slow, it doesn’t matter. George has affected the career of every trance artist today. No one can argue with that.

He defined the sound of South Beach. {tab=Bio}

Trance, whether you like your trance melodic and uplifting, or hard and fast, trance by any definition is here to stay. From the warehouse parties of the late 80’s to car commercials in 2001, trance has become part of the new millennium, part of our lifestyle. And all because of DJs like George Acosta. George proves every time he puts a needle on a record that “trance”, whatever the label, has changed, evolved, become a lifestyle, a culture… as well it should. With over 15 years of experience as a DJ and producer, George has helped change and evolve trance from an underground movement to massive festival experiences throughout the world. “George Acosta is probably America’s most unique DJ and has undoubtedly been a major force in shaping the sound of trance in Miami and beyond” says fellow DJ Dave Ralph. George Acosta is America’s representative in the global Trance scene.

Coming up playing warehouse parties in his native Miami, he then went on to producing tracks of his own with such international hits like Planet Soul, Emotions, Taking Over Space, R U Awake and The Reaper. He then made the next logical step for a successful DJ/producer and opened his own record store, Grooveman Music in Miami.

He knows his crowds so well because he is just as big a fan as they are of his music. Just like the thousands he plays for, George Acosta lives it. George tries to maintain a close connection to the people who come to hear him play because like them, he discovered the music as a fan first.

It was during his three-year residency at Miami’s famed Shadow Lounge that George honed his craft and began educating South Beach to this wonderful emotional roller-coaster ride that was quickly moving west from Europe. Now firmly entrenched in South Beach, George produced his first mix cd, “Awake”. This became the definitive sound of South Beach. It was this same cd that helped propel George on to the world stage.

With record bag and headphones in hand, George prepared to move the planet in his own unique way. He began playing some of the biggest clubs and festivals in the world, Berlin’s Love Parade, Miami’s Ultra Beach Festival and Rave on the Rocks to name a few. And with demand for George reaching a fever pitch, he produced his second mix cd,”Release: AM and PM”. This ambitious double cd was representative of his legendary all night sets, evoking the different emotions and textures of his sets, from epic, string-soothed splendor to searing tech-trance.

The demand for all things George Acosta soon led to other successful mix cds: such as “Trance Nation America” through Ministry of Sound along with his latest release entitled “History of Trance” on Ultra Records. George is also currently in the studio working on some original material with such artists as worldwide sensation Jon Secada among others.

“Traveling to different places and countries every week, playing for so many people–it makes me want to play more intimate stuff,” he explains. “I used to play harder. Now I’m into the more melodic stuff. I guess when you grow into this scene you want to play records that mean something.” George proves he’s a trance DJ that can move onto something bigger and better. “Whenever I play anywhere, I feel like I am at home, I look down to the dance floor and I see my people, they understand me, they understand what is happening as I spin my records.” It’s a journey that happens week after week, and George is their guide.

From: Sweden (both of em)

Style: John: Uplifting, Techy, Bang Out House. Albin: Dirty, uplifting, progressive, AWESOME house music

Famous Tracks: John: Blink, Don’t Speak, Pyramid. Albin: Times Like These, I Amsterdam, David Guetta & Kelly Rowland – When Love Takes Over (Albin Myers Remix), There 4 You

Best Known For: John: Cool beats, unusual melodies, characteristic vocals. Albin: The mohawk, a kick ass YouTube channel. Both Together: Switching between 1st person shooters and production work

He’s from Sweden and spins house music… but John Dahlback has more than carved out his own place in the Swedish dance music pecking order. Known for his techy yet melodic, sometimes disco-esque basslines; Dahlback rips dance floors apart with a style that everyone can vibe with.

2010 marked the release of his 2xCD ‘Mutants’ album (October) as well a recent remix for Benny Benassi (December). Mutants is also the name of his new label, an imprint on the infamous Defected Records.

He’s from Sweden and spins house music as well… but Albin Meyers is more than carving out his own place in the Swedish dance music pecking order. Hmmm… interesting. After watching his YouTube channel, Club Glow became instance fans of Albin’s music, personality, and yes, the mohawk.

Seeing the two of them together is like watching a magician pull a rabbit from a hat while telling a hilarious joke and hooking you up with backstage passes at the same time. Pretty awesome…{tab=Bio}
JOHN DAHLBACK
Growing up with a drumming father and singing mother, I’ve always been attracted by different sounds which developed into my own music. I guess rather than going to parties all the time I’d rather use the energy every day to go to the studio early in the morning and leave late afternoon.

Creating a song with lyrics, that don’t always make sense as the hook (!), my career took another step. Take “Blink” which means a lot for me, being as different as I wanted it to be, it made it onto radio, TV and put my name on the list which I’m really grateful for. So where could I go from there I thought, well, I just keep doing what I love and stick to my own sound. The new album which will be out after the summer, which funny enough is my sixth, I’ve done everything on it I’ve always wanted to. Cool beats, unusual melodies and characteristic vocals, I guess summarize me as a person.

Defected has always been one of my favorite labels and working with them is an honor. So now it’s time to finally start releasing music from the album, and on my own new label Mutants, I feel proud that I’ve done it. Hopefully you’ll also enjoy it as much as I do and want to thank you for being there, giving me your feedback and supporting me.

ALBIN MYERS
Being brought up in a family with theatre & music as the first and foremost love, it is easy to understand the will and driving force behind Albin Myers’ music. When he teamed up with Swedish label Joia Records in 2008, Albin got the great chance to remix some of the biggest artists and projects in the contemporary Dance Music scene, such as David Guetta & Kelly Rowland, Erick Morillo, Tom Novy, EDX, John Dahlbäck and Greg Cerrone to name a few…

When it comes to Albin Myers DJing, it definitely something you have to see. With the greatest energy behind the decks, using his whole body to express the music, Albin gets his crowds dancing in no time!

As Albin now breaks ground with his own releases such as “Times Like These”,”There 4 You”, “Jump” &” Romani Beats” and with original productions for Serial, Pickadoll and the UK’s own Defected, the future looks even brighter than the recent past for this high-flying artist.{tab=Video}

From: Holland

Style: Trance/Progressive Trance/ Tech Trance

Famous Tracks: Riff, Renegade (2010 Trance Energy Theme), Back By Any Demand, Sia – The Girl You Lost to Cocaine (Sander van Doorn Remix), Armin van Buuren – Control Freak (Sander van Doorn Remix), pretty much everything he makes is gold. Love is Darkness is going to be HUGE!

Best Known For: Being one of the best acts in dance music. Relentless beats. Taking progressive trance to the next level. The biggest smile EVER.

DJ Mag Rank: 12

One of the most celebrated acts in dance music today, it’s almost disrespectful to say it, but Sander van Doorn has a bigger smile than any other DJ. Sorry everyone, but he does. It’s infectious. When you see a DJ cheesing that hard off music, you can’t help but lose yourself in the moment!

It’s true when we say that his famous tracks are all of them, it’s tough to just pick a few. The scary thing? Sander’s biggest year was 2010, and he’s charging into 2011. With the success of his new ‘Dusk Till Doorn’ mix series, massive tours and a new album in the works, there’s no stopping Sander!

Check out Love is Darkness, his first vocal production ever in the music section!
{tab=Bio}
Thought to be a technical genius by many, Sander van Doorn is without a doubt one of the worlds most essential, influential and populist DJ/Producers in dance music today. In very short order, Sander has become a brand synonymous with excellence – both production wise and in front of the thousands he plays to nightly. Recently awarded the “Top 10 DJ” honor by DJ Mag (Oct 28, 09), Sander’s rise has been nothing short of phenomenal.

Those with an ear for music have known of Sander for some time now, but 2008 really ramped the producer’s popularity and tour diary into overdrive. Headlining the most prestigious institutions dance music has ever known {Mysterland (NL), Dance Valley (NL), Global Gathering (UK), Godskitchen, Garudas, Sankeys, Pacha (NY) Cream (Ibiza Residency), Sensation, Trance Energy and EDC (LA)} to name but a few, Sander has become what Armin van Buuren describes as “A DJ’s DJ.”
Hailing from a small town in The Netherlands called Eindhoven, Sander van Doorn today is electronic music royalty. But of course, this wasn’t always so.

“I started going out to parties when I was 14. We had parties in Holland called ‘Tunnel Raves’ which are like free parties. It was from going to these that I knew I wanted to be a DJ.”- SvD

Early in 2004, Sander was beginning his DJ career, playing locally and producing one offs that he could play out. It wasn’t until he produced a bootleg of the Polices’ ‘Message in a Bottle’ that industry began to take notice. Within two short years, Sander was named Mixmags ‘Future Hero’, with no one really knowing how truly prophetic that title would become. Massive productions followed and garnered Sander the coveted Breakthrough Artist Award at the 2008 IDMA’s in Miami, and a nomination for Best Breakthrough Track for “Riff.” 2008 also saw the release of Supernaturalistic, Sanders first artist album. The album immediately connected with fans and industry alike, charting prominently and cemented Sanders standing within the EDM community.

Sanders alter egos have allowed the superstar to weave seamlessly between genres, furthering his massive popularity among a diverse cross section of fans. Recording under such aliases as; Sam Sharp, Sandler, Purple Haze and Filterfunk, Sander van Doorn has amassed a legacy of recordings (originals, remixes and bootlegs) that are not only anthems, but songs that define a generation. Not bad for a lad from Eindhoven.

Famous Tracks: Man with the Red Face, Columbian Soul, Good Times, Conscindo,

Best Known For: Starting the Toolroom movement. Finding time to run a label, publishing company, produce music AND DJ. Leading a new style of house music.

DJ Mag Rank: 53

After the time we showed him on Halloween, it’s no wonder Mark Knight is back again for another round of Toolroom magic! Mark works so hard in his various endeavors that spinning at a club is a welcome break from the pile of production, label management and publishing on his plate.

He’s got an artist album due out this year as well as that alleged collaboration with Tiesto we keep hearing about!

Get ready for a wild knight of Toolroom funk at Lima Lounge, as we put Mark within arms reach!!!
{tab=Bio}
Mark Knight’s legacy already ranks him as a leading player in dance music culture. His rise to the forefront has been more than just gigs and remixes; his contribution to the scene via his label Toolroom Records, demonstrates abilities that supercede the glorified title of ‘DJ’.

This year, with a Grammy Nomination for work on the Black Eyed Peas’ multi-platinum album ‘The-End’, 3 of the biggest selling records on Beatport’s ‘Best Sellers List’; ‘Music Matters’ ‘Flauta Magica’ & ‘Good Times’, an IDMA nomination for his Toolroom Knights weekly radio show and a prestigious Beatport award for his single ‘Good Times’ – 2010 has most definitely been a year of colossal achievement.

So where did it all start…

In 2004, with a personal vision for house music, Mark created his own workshop for 21st century dance musicians, Toolroom Records, and with it a new way of thinking.

Since its launch, the Toolroom imprint has developed into an uncontrollable beast, celebrating success as the biggest selling label on Beatport and reaching the milestone of 100 releases in 2009 courtesy of Faithless.

As a producer, Mark has built a reputation for outstanding releases; ‘Man With The Red Face’, ‘Downpipe’, ‘Good Times’, ‘Devil Walking’, consistently topping international dance charts, and has been involved in producing tracks for leading artists, including new output from Faithless and contribution to the latest Underworld album.

And there’s more…

As a DJ, Mark holds international prominence, recognised the world over for his extended 7 hour sets, headlining festivals and clubs from Ultra Music Festival Miami to the Terrace at Space Ibiza.

In 2006, Mark’s belief and desire to inject freshness into a stale club scene, inspired him to programme his own parties, this concept became a reality with the launch of Toolroom Knights at Ministry of Sound, London in October ’06.

Having gained unrivalled success as one of THE superior club nights, Toolroom Knights has gone on to generate great global success and support with Mark headlining Toolroom residencies at Cocoon Frankfurt, Space Miami, Ministry of Sound London, Pacha New York as well as hosting Toolroom arenas at key festivals including; SW4 London, Global Gathering UK, Dance Valley Netherlands.

All in all, it’s been a BIG journey for Mark Knight, pioneering a sound and attitude that’s gained respect from fans and industry people alike hungry for the integrity of Mark’s production skills and quality of Toolroom Knights’ parties. And there’s so much more to come.
