The World is Your Urinal; Don’t Take Life Sitting Down

All the girls standing in the line for the bathroom!

people in line for the bathroom
Sick of waiting in line for the bathroom?

.

Hey ladies…

Ever dreamed of relieving yourself without the hassle of waiting for a stall to open up?

Here are a few innovative, yet shocking solutions to this age-old problem:

.
.
.

The Pollee

.
Designed by Danish company UiWE/PeeBetter, the Pollee Shy, Pollee Topless and Pollee Naked are three women’s urinal prototypes that allow for varied amounts of coverage in the powder room.

The pollee series of women's urinals
The Pollee Shy, Pollee Topless and Pollee Naked provide varying degrees of privacy for women's urinals
the women's urinal, by pollee
Identity Festival yes. Minibar we're not so sure about

These women’s urinals were recently unveiled at Roskilde Festival (Denmark), one of Europe’s largest music festivals. Imagine going to Bonaroo, Coachella, or Identity Festival Washington DC and not having to use nasty port-a-potties.

Standing Alternatives

Want to push the envelope and do away with sitting down altogether? No problem, several companies have come out with different solutions:

The She-pee, The Shewee, The Whiz and our personal favorite, the Go-Girl, are all designed to eliminate the need to sit or squat. It’s basically a plastic penis, which allows women to “aim” at the desired location.

1 + 1 +1 +1 = Google

Mark Zuckerberg is shook!

Google recently released Google+, its own social networking website. While still in the development phase, Google + is about to blow up!!!

While somewhat similar to Facebook, Google+ has a handful of cool features, including:

Google + Circles

Circles let users put their contacts into specific groups and share according to these preferences. For example, ‘party friends’ in one circle, ‘family’ in another, ‘coworkers’ and so on

Google + Sparks

Similar to the Facebook news feed, Sparks lets users share social media with each other. Based on users’ interests, it also identifies news and other links they might like.

Google + Hangouts

Used to facilitate group video chat. Ten people maximum can participate in a single Hangout at a time. STOP! Rewind… 10 person video chats!!!

Google + Huddles

Group texting feature that lets you have a group chat through your phone. Available on Android, iPhone, and SMS devices.

Google + Instant Upload

Specific to Android mobile devices, Instant Upload stores photos or video in a private album for sharing later

3 Steps to starting your very own Google+ account:

  1. Visit plus.google.com
  2. Sign into your Google profile. Or create one if you don’t yet have one.
  3. Upload a picture and have fun!

Google+ is growing at an incredibly rapid rate. At the end of its first week online, it was estimated to already have 4.5 million users. These accounts have become all the rage as the number of Google+ users expands by the day!

In addition to being a website, Google+ will also be available as a desktop application and on Android and iOS operating systems.

Can Google+ compete at the level of Facebook, which already has 700 million users around the world?

The Air Down There: The Art of the Sundress

The city streets are sizzling with record high temperatures.

Leaving the comforts of home means getting smacked in the face with an industrial strength hair dryer of heat.

For those who work, go to school, or don’ t have a sugar daddy with a swimming pool and servants, stripping down is your only option.

Washington D.C. isn’t Miami Beach; you can’ t just go trolling around in your thong bikini to pick up some groceries or go to lunch. So, short of being naked, sundresses are a viable option to keep you and your nether regions cool, comfortable, and if chosen correctly, cute.

Sundress Victoria's Secret Washington DC nightlife
Vibrant colors during the day and a refined look in the evening are sundress do's.

Do…

  • Try a vibrant color or pattern
  • Wear an appropriate length for age and body type
  • Dress it up for a night out
  • Mix it up with a belt or chain accessories
  • Show of your best assets- be it a great halter to show off your back or an appropriate mini for your newly spray tanned stems!

.

You're not going camping with third graders, are you?

Don’t…

  • Wear a tent
  • Confuse a nightgown or beach cover-up with a dress
  • Forget the appropriate undergarments
  • Look age inappropriate with a baby doll dress channeling Courtney Love
  • Go all Jersey with multiple animal prints at once (watch The Real Housewives of New Jersey and do the opposite)

.

.

The Best Brand is No Brand: MM

The invisible icon.

    Maison Martin Margiela photograph
Featured in a 2008 NY Times article, this may be the only photograph in existence of the fashion world's invisible icon. It's thought to have been taken circa 1997
  • You won’t see him on the runway, bowing after a fashion show.
  • Prior to a NY Times spread in 2008, you wouldn’t have found any photographs of Belgian fashion designer Maison Martin Margiela.
  • Media contact existed through fax.

In fact, you may never see him period. The ultra discreet fashion icon slowly removed himself from the world of design during the end of the 200X’s.
.

But his vision lives on.

Sunglasses by maison martin margiela
Defining style

The MM brand was acquired by Diesel in 2002. After Margiela’s departure, the position of creative director remained vacant. He’s there but he’s not. And the name lives on.

The brand’s goal is to remain at least five years ahead of the curve at all times, maintaining a minimalist design without logo/brand recognition.

Being that it’s summer in Washington DC, instead of profiling a ton of various luxury brand sunglasses we wanted to show you the best of the best. Of course, the MM brand features some of the highest-end clothing in the world as well, if you can afford it!

Of course, if you want to purchase any of this stuff, you have to do it in person in NY, Miami, Beverly Hills, Europe or Asia.

Margiela's fashion lines have driven countless high-end trends for decades

Facebook Video Chat Finally Available!

Facebook Announces New Video Chat

Facebook + SkypeIn typical Facebook style, Mark Zuckerburg first hinted at video chat by promising “something awesome.” That “something awesome” was video chat powered by the video chat gurus at Skype. It’s not a new piece of software or website, it’s neatly integrated into the chat features already utilized by most Facebook users today.

How to Use it Today:

Facebook has not officially launched video chat but you can get in on the action today. Browse to facebook.com/videocalling and click “Get Started” to enable. It may have to download a plugin but the setup is effortless and mostly automatic.

Facebook Video Calling

After installed, video chatting with your friends is as easy as clicking the call button either at the top of their profile page or the video camera logo while using regular Facebook chat.

Call Your FriendsYour friends haven’t installed Facebook chat yet? No problem, when you “call” them their computer will ring and prompt them to install the plugin.

The Video Chat to End All Others

So what does this mean for you and everyone else? It means more online social interaction in a more personal way. But it also means that the attention will move away from independent services by other companies. AIM has been fading for years and this may be the final blow, Google Chat has been slow to get going but perhaps Google Plus will be the help it needs, and the other services are mostly focused on certain markets and not the masses. Skype is notably missing from the list and the reason is simple: Facebook Video Calling is Skype. Well, it’s powered by Skype, which means combined with their international reach, that they will see business in time to come (and this probably makes them some money too). But why is Facebook the decisive force in this battle? The answer is simple: 750 million active users, 50% of whom log on daily. Facebook’s statistics are indeed impressive with over 700 billion minutes a month being spent on their website. To put that into perspective, 700 billion looks like this: 700,000,000,000 and is 1,330,928.12 years. The way things look currently, competing directly against Facebook is difficult to say the least and their new feature just solidifies their dominance.

Video Chat Preview

So what do you think? Will you use their new feature? Will Facebook take over the world? Is Facebook evil? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Atmosphere: Eighteenth Street Lounge has long been one of Washington DC’s most eclectic, sophisticated and exclusive nightlife venues. Founded in 1995 by the DC-bred, internationally acclaimed live DJ act Thievery Corporation, ESL operates out of a 19th Century Victorian mansion formerly owned by President Theodore Roosevelt. Over the years the swanky DC lounge has become a landmark of DC nightlife.
Venue Overview

With no signs, awnings or anything else to indicate that you’ve arrived, ESL can be difficult to find for someone visiting for the first time. Years ago the venue was so under the radar there was a doorbell and peephole for the bouncer to check before you could go in! With no formal advertisement, the owners managed to create a DC club brand by word of mouth. The venue is actually located above a ‘Mattress Discounters’ store at the intersection of 18th and Connecticut. The door is just to the left.

As you enter and ascend your way to the main level of ESL, you’re met by a DJ booth and small dance area. To the left is a mini-lounge/dance area and beyond that a large outdoor terrace complete with bar! Turning right, you find the main bar and the spacious Main Room with all the comforts of any high roller’s pad, including dazzling chandeliers, fireplaces, high ceilings, and plenty of couches for lounging.

Live music at 18th street lounge
ESL is live!!!

Walking down from the main room into the sunken Gold Room brings you to a dance floor with mini-stage and sound booth. The Gold Room plays host to DJ acts, jam bands, reggae and Brazilian performances and more!

Going back to the main room, patrons may find a staircase leading to the top level Jazz Bar which on occasion features techno DJs as well!

18th Street Lounge’s overall appeal is in the comfortable, eclectic elegance of the venue coupled with the mix of well to do patrons looking for a chill, relaxing atmosphere sans pretentiousness. It’s without question a must-visit for anyone who enjoys going out in DC!

Parties
  • Wednesdays are one of the best nights to visit ESL. Reggae night features a DJ in the main room, live music in the Gold Room and one of the coolest crowds in DC nightlife!
  • Thursdays can feature anything from live Brazilian acts to house DJs and everything in between!
  • Fridays are more eclectic rhythms – DJs, funk bands and an amazing vibe!
  • Saturdays keep the vibe alive, baby!
  • Sundays, like Wednesdays, are one of ESL’s foundation nights. With music from legendary DC house resident Sam The Man Burns, the night is a classic!
