There are many things that keep Argentina’s greatest prog export on his toes, despite over 14 years in the business. What excites Hernan Cattaneo the most is electronic music’s forever changing forms…. He has been most excited, as of late, about his loyal following in Japan.

“I can play whatever music I want. The clubs are purely for dancing; big black boxes with great soundsystems, and I love that as a DJ.”

As well as gigs in Asia, Australia, Europe and both Americas, 2010 has also seen Cattaneo push himself as a DJ. On the second disc of his most recent mix for Renaissance back in June, he stepped outside of his usual operational framework and pleasantly surprised everyone in the process… with downtempo, 105 BPM selections. To his pleasant surprise, the fan reaction was overwhelmingly positive.

Although said slo-mo sounds are not something Cattaneo has tried in the clubs just yet, their warm reception has given the Argentine motivation to work on a studio album.

“I always wanted to do a full length but to make it strictly full of dancefloor tracks wasn’t attractive to me. Now I know people love this slower, more downtempo sound I tried on the Renaissance mix, it’s great news!”

Bio

Hernan Cattaneo’s twenty year journey through music shows no sign of slowing down over right now – anything but. From Bahrain to Belfast, Singapore to San Diego, Hernan’s love laboured travels know no bounds in their trans-continental reach with the Argentinean on a round-the-clock mission to spread his love for electronic music. Constantly absorbing new sounds, cultures and influences from the most varied outposts possible, Hernan bleeds them into as many projects as he can – be they production work, his masterpiece mix CDs ,his radio shows or forthcoming music label.

Make no mistake, Hernan is riding a creative wave right now. Recently dropping some of his most complete productions on labels like Urbantorque, he’s also stepping up his game with his new digital label which will offer a regular output for his creative visions. But for a man literally living and breathing through the scene such endeavours are simply instinctive. Put simply, for Hernan music isn’t simply an occupation – it’s an existence.

Indeed, one thing you’ll never see Hernan do is complaining. Blessed with a passion as warm and honest as his welcoming smile, Hernan’s rich journey has been rooted with an innate understanding ever since he heard imported 12”s from Frankie Knuckles, Derrick May and Inner City back in the mid 80s. Already a lover of bands like Depeche Mode and New Order, the sound at once inspired and excited Hernan with possibility. Consumed by the nascent electronic energies of Chicago, Detroit and further a field in Europe, Hernan was driven to express his passions for these sounds through DJing and soon earned a cult residency at Buenos Aires Clubland.

The epi-central club of a burgeoning Argentinean dance scene, it is here at the legendary Clubland where Cattaneo established professional respect and personal friendships with DJs like Danny Tenaglia, John Digweed and – most significantly – Perfecto boss Paul Oakenfold. Immediately impressed with Cattaneo’s impassioned genre-traversing abilities, the extent of Oakenfold’s belief in the Argentinean was as obvious as it was instant. Just months later Cattaneo was invited to join Oakenfold on a European wide Perfecto tour.

With the window of global opportunity opened, the Argentinean ambassador impressed at every turn. Club giants Cream soon secured him their South American resident and were impressed enough to install him as international resident at Cream Liverpool. Rapidly gaining a taste and skill for the larger stage, Hernan doubled with appearances at festivals like Nevada’s legendary Burning Man as well as key debuts at European institutions like Homelands, Bedrock, Pacha and Fabric. By the time, Hernan had mixed Perfecto’s first international mix CD –South America volume – he was confirmed as one of those rare DJs able to their art in an adventure through sound – each individual set a true journey through varying genres, sounds and emotions.

Both a true DJs DJ and a peoples’ favourite, Hernan’s popularity spiralled within the new Millennium and his efforts were rewarded with festival sets at Creamfields, Homelands and Clapham Common festival in 2001. Always looking forward, the music lover soon turned his hands to production with a stream of deep, carefully crafted releases on Perfecto including collaborations with Cass and Mangan before his remix for Morgan Page courted vinyl release on John Digweed’s standard bearing Bedrock imprint. Since Hernan’s visions have explored productions many different territories, each one has been a further step on his journey through music. As a remixer labels like Deep Dish’s Yoshitoshi, Ministry of Sound and Renaissance have all called upon Hernan magic touch.

As a DJ, the most lasting documents of Hernan’s unique ability to weave stories from sounds are his many CD outings for the legendary Renaissance too. Back in 2005, it spoke volumes on Hernan’s rising stock that he was hand-picked to succeed DJ legends like John Digweed, Deep Dish and Sasha on the aptly named Masters series. But far from sitting in the shadows of his predecessors, Hernan seized the opportunity to mark himself out as a legend in his own right. Widely loved and acclaimed, his individual mix shifted seamlessly through genres and was coloured with both the rich seam of melody and lush lulling groove that his fans have come to love and know him for.

A second seamless Masters volume followed in 2006 before Hernan embarked on his own individual Renaissance series named Sequential. For many, it is here where the Argentinean ambassador truly came into his own with a mix that was as deeply international as his own ceaseless tour diary. Uniting seductive international electronic sounds from across the globe – including Belgium, Slovenia, Norway and Poland to name just a few – Cattaneo created a timeless mix CD so carefully constructed and considered that it sits and fits perfectly to this day. It was followed by another faultless Sequential in 2007.
But as much as his CDs provide a perfect snapshot, it’s that human connection that drives Cattaeno further through music. And whether he’s taking crowd on an epic journey at festivals like Coachella, Exit and Creamfields or getting down to some honest house grooves at Def Mix’s institutional night at Pacha Ibiza, he is able to be inspired and inspire in equal measure.

Indeed, as long as he’s playing the music he loves, you can be sure of three things; that he’ll be happy in whichever corner of the globe he finds himself and that those on the dancefloor are in for some special.

NIC FANCIULLI (DJ)
SKYLARK / BUICK PROJECT (LIVE)
From being a shy, talented DJ plying his trade as resident at his local club, to becoming a global superstar, the rise and rise of Nic Fanciulli has been well documented. He has graced countless covers of the most respected dance publications whilst his name repeatedly pops up when clubbers discuss the finest DJ talent in recent years.

Nic joined the music world at 16, where he worked in the local record shop and DJ’d in the local bars, in his hometown of Maidstone, Kent. It was here that he earned his first proper break courtesy of the town’s house institution ClubClass. Aged just twenty Nic became main room resident for the night he remains fully committed to. Nic’s ClubClass residency would form the launch pad for his future success. Nic welcomed many legendary names to the night such as Deep Dish, Pete Tong, John Digweed and X-Press 2, all of whom were blown away his use of deep techy sounds, acid b-lines and dark melodic grooves. The residency also gave Nic the opportunity to play at different times of the night, allowing him to develop his own sound as well as develop a tremendous understanding of what is expected from a DJ.

Fast forward to 2006 and Nic boasts a portfolio of residencies across the globe that is both testament to his talent and versatility. Starting in the USA, Nic previously held a quarterly resident at Space in Miami, undoubtedly one of the finest nightclubs on the planet. With one Space in the bag, another comes in the form of that legendary terrace in Ibiza for which Nic now plays nearly every Sunday in the summer. This resulted in the headline “Terrace Kings” which Nic achieved alongside Paul Woolford on their DJ Magazine cover story in August 2006. He also held a residency at the magnificent Il Muretto in Venice and finally back to Britain, where Nic has been responsible for ClubClass developing from a provincial club event, to one of the UK’s finest and most influential house nights. ClubClass then went to the Ministry Of Sound in London, which has given Nic an excellent platform in which to showcase his music, as well as the opportunity to play alongside the likes of Danny Tenaglia, Rolando and Funk D’ Void. March 2008 sees Nic starting a brand new night called Atomic at the esteemed club The End in London. Nic is in good company, The End’s has fellow resident holders include Laurent Garnier and Sven Vath.

Nic’s production and remix work alongside Andy Chatterley, under Skylark and its bastard son Buick Project, has proved fundamental in pushing him through as both an artist and DJ. Essential new tune status is a regular occurrence for Nic’s productions and he has been called upon to remix a plethora of acts including Underworld, Tiefschwarz, Unkle, Kylie and Deep Dish. Critical acclaim doesn’t get much better than a Grammy nomination and exactly what they got in 2007 when Buick Project was nominated for their remix of Tracey Thorn/Tiefschwarz track ‘Damage’.

Add this to successful releases for Renaissance and it’s clear that Nic enjoys a very busy studio schedule. Working with Renaissance has now become common place for Nic after he followed the likes of Sasha, Digweed and Deep Dish, by releasing a compilation on their legendary series in 2005. The mix received huge props from journalists and clubbers alike, was backed by a thirty date world tour and sold thousands worldwide.

Another string to Nic’s impeccable bow comes in the form of Saved Records which launched in October 2004. Widely regarded as one of the leading cutting edge labels on the scene, Saved has gone on to release compositions from both established producers such as Zoo Brazil, Paolo Mojo and Audiofly, to up and coming talent such as James Talk and Shafunkers, with remixes being delivered from the likes of Alex Smoke and Paul Woolford. “There is such an untapped pool of talent across the world at the moment that I want to help the new kids coming through get the recognition their music rightly deserves” says Nic.

2007 saw Nic join forces with James Zabiela for their One+One alliance, causing something of a press frenzy they toured across the globe, made some original productions in the form of ‘No Pressure’ and ‘Rover’ and released a double CD. Wasting no time Nic then went back in the studio with Skylark partner Andy and the result was their first artist album; ‘I-Panik’ was released in November of 2007 with a full remix package coming in Spring 2008. The likes of Laurent Garnier praised the album and the press were blown away – citing it as an intelligent piece of electronica. The remix package sees contributions from acts as diverse as Joris Voorn, Funk Dvoid, Joel Mull, and many others.

With a list of achievements that already overshadows many DJs ten years his senior, its clear that Nic Fanciulli has proven how combining genuine talent with dedication can go a long way. And whilst his record label, residencies, productions and compilations continue to open the ears of thousands of people across the planet, the fact he has a whole host of future projects up his sleeve reveals the best is still to come…

DAVIDE SQUILLACE
Davide is not available for comment. He’s got to catch a flight; he’s rushing to the studio; the stage manager is frantically hurrying him into the booth; he’s meeting to discuss plans for his labels…or any of the other myriad reasons why Davide feels like he hasn’t slept, eaten or stopped running for what seems like his whole life.

Born in Siena, raised in Naples, it took a trip to London for Davide to finally discover electronic music. Wooed by the mood and sound of the British scene, he returned to Naples flush with energy, excitement and a knowing that this new calling would consume him. Davide immersed himself in this world in every conceivable way. In 1999 he began studying at the Naples’ school of sound engineering, tinkering with his first productions, promoting techno events, and finally performing. His first releases on Primate Records, Design Music and Conform were a cadence of his arrival and showcased the young artist’s steadfast style. Having honed his craft at home, in 2004 Davide left Naples for Barcelona unwavering in his resolve. Now, while touring around the continent, he began to release in earnest what would become a massive body of work, and at a dizzying pace.

His productions have graced the catalogs of some of the finest labels including Ovum, Sci+Tec, Morris Audio, Resopal Schallware, Supernature, CMYK, Adagio, Viva, Nervous, Saved, Shake, Rillis; the list goes on… Which is not even to speak of his curating and releasing on his own labels – Sketch, Minisketch, Vir, 500, Titbit and most recently the bold Hideout Records. In addition to his genre-defining works, Davide continues to inspire and ignite dancefloors worldwide. Whether it be at Circoloco, where he has been a resident since 2007, Womb, Berghain, D.Edge, or any other marquee venue, Davide plays with an unequalled funk and excitement. His signature sets, revered by the masses and peers alike, do a double duty in guarding our much-loved traditions while constantly pushing them forward. The realm of possibilities for one of electronic music’s leading lights is endless. Unfortunately, the minutes in the day are not. Davide’s answer is simple – do what you love and make no compromises.

LUCA BACCHETTI
Not unhumorously hailing from the small Tuscan town of Lucca, Luca Bacchetti is one of the foremost proponents of the seminal swing sound coming from the peninsula and abroad. Currently residing in Barcelona, the DJ, producer and co-label head makes swift business of spreading his signature twists and musical turns through myriad productions and remixes released on Ovum Recordings, Wagon Repair, Supernature, Be As One, Tenax, Safari Electronique, Sci+Tec and of course, Hideout. Additionally, he’s accrued a host of accolades including a nod for Beatport’s best artist in 2008 that confirms Luca’s status as an industry leader.

As a DJ, Bacchetti’s style is incomparable, showcasing his unique ear for selection and rare ‘voice’ to which he adds a sexiness uncommon amongst his peers. Equally versed at moving a dark basement club to fits of revelry as he is to casting a deep shadow across a sunny beach party, the breadth and depth of sources from which Luca culls his sets astounds constantly. It is this duality of emotion that interests the DJ and inspires the work on many releases, specifically his last – The Endless Summer. The contrasting shades of Luca’s sound have not been lost on the world’s clubbing masses. Marquee venues from Berlin to Tokyo from NYC to Buenos Aires have hosted the DJ to untempered excitement and have been converted to the light of the darker and brighter sides of his sound….

A fixture in the Miami club scene, Gervais could more or less count DC as a second home. His ability to spin underground dance music with mainstream appeal is a rare gift. He brings that and more to Club Glow on each and every occasion. He’s one of the few DJs who has headlined at all of our venues (minus the newly minuted Barcode… can you say after party?).

Bio

It is an uncommon occurrence in the Electronic Dance Music scene to find an artist sensationally talented as both a DJ and a producer. Cedric Gervais is of the rare breed whose talents behind the decks translate over into the production room. For years he has captivated clubbers and partygoers as he reigned supreme over the Miami dance scene. Although originally born in Marseilles, Cedric Gervais has chosen Miami as his adopted home, and the city has been more than happy to embrace him. He has held residencies at Crobar (now Cameo) and the world famous Nikki Beach, before taking over the Space Terrace. Cedric’s presence at the Space Terrace was felt immediately as people in the thousands began lining up to witness him devastate the after-hours scene. Despite being in such heavy demand, Cedric still found time to take his talents into the studio.

His first single with Ultra Records, “Burning” was a great success on both the charts and the underground circuit. Soon after, he unleashed his debut album “The Experiment”, which featured the massive hit, “Spirit in My Life”. The album took him to a different level as he spent the next couple of years touring the world, entertaining and thrilling his many fans. His production credits include working with the likes of Lenny Kravitz, Deep Dish, Steve Lawler, and Rachel Star, just to name a few. Whilst maintaining a hectic tour schedule, Cedric has managed to both continue his residency at Space and spend plenty of time in the production room. His latest single, “Mauri’s Dream”, was Pete Tong’s Essential Tune of the Week three weeks in a row, and has received great critical acclaim from both DJs and producers. Many consider it to be one of the best, if not the best song revealed at the 2009 Winter Music Conference. It will be hard for any producer to top “Mauri’s Dream”, but tantalizingly enough, Cedric has expressed that “Mauri’s Dream” is just the beginning of what should be a string of smash hit releases.

Currently, Cedric is working on his highly anticipated second album, “Miamication”; which is scheduled for release later this summer. He is working closely with Sharam (of Deep Dish fame) and the duo already had a monster record together, entitled, “U Don’t Even Know Us”, under the moniker, Sharvais. Cedric has also just relaunched his two record labels, Sleaze Records and SleazeTech. Having undergone major makeovers, the two labels are ready to take the Electronic Dance Music world by storm. Sleaze Records will specialize in house music and SleazeTech will focus on Techno and Minimal. Both labels are set to begin a heavy release schedule with the first set of releases coming in the end of April. With a host of new talent signed to the two labels, it is only a matter of time before Cedric propels them both to the top. Very few have managed to enjoy the kind of success Cedric Gervais has worked hard to achieve in such a short span of time. The scary, yet enthralling aspect about Cedric’s career is that it has yet to reach it peak. Although it would be cliché to say the future is bright for this young star, it is nevertheless true. No one can be sure what is in store for Cedric, but what can be certain is his impact will be one that will be felt for generations to come

With his recent remix of Kaskade’s ‘Dynasty’ landing safely in the hands of Ryan himself, Glow resident Roberto Gonzalez is steadily climbing the ladder to fame well beyond our DC EDM community. Roberto’s music library is disgustingly huge and well equipped for throwing an amazing party. His knowledge of the DC crowd and what we like is unparalleled.

From contest winner to regular opening duties, Rez-E is jogging down the path most local acts dream about. He has opened for Wolfgang Gartner and Avicii, headlined with Des McMahon, is slotted for future opening sets and on December 4 will be spinning along side Glow resident Roberto Gonzalez. It’s not often local acts have such wild followings, but rest assured, every time Rez-E takes the decks his network is out in full force, going absolutely wild… and for good reason!!

Bio

Roberto started spinning as a hobby that was quickly turned into something that he loves. He has had a life long love of all types of music, but his true love is in Electronic music. His interest was first sparked by attending club events, especially GLOW, introducing him to all the different forms of electronic dance music. Through the years he has experimented with all styles, until he found his true passion; Progressive/Trance.

In 2003, he was granted his big break into the local DC scene, by holding down a residency for CitySonic’s monthly parties located in the Attic at HOME nightclub (now called ULTRA BAR). In 2004, he began to create his own productions with the help of his friend Eric Jao (DJ Enferno). Since then Roberto has been working along side Pete Moutso, Music Director and DJ of GLOW (www.clubglow.com) for the past Five years. Pete has been a big help in mentoring Roberto and has benefited a great deal, which shows in his DJ sets. In 2007, Roberto made a series of mixes called Images, which help spread his name within DC. The series help people get an idea of what they can expect from Roberto’s dj sets.

Today Roberto has established himself as one of the guys to watch out for within the local scene of DC. Currently he is working a productions and collaborating along with his brother Javier and Casey Keyworth (Breakfast) of Flashover Recordings on new productions. The one thing he always shoots for is to be able to share great music and vibe at any of his shows with the crowd.

Funky, crazy & wild. These are only but a few words used to describe a dance floor during a set by DC’s Rezilly. Born in America with Iranian blood flowing through his veins, Rezilly has always been obsessed with dance music since he was a kid.

He began DJing parties at the age of 14 and has been producing since he was 18. As years have passed he’s began to make quite a name for himself by opening for artists such as Wale, Jason Derulo, Wolfgang Gartner & Dieselboy. He’s also played in a number of clubs in the DC area including Lima, Midtown, Current, Eyebar & Club 24. In May 2010 Rez-E graduated from JMU with degrees in Justice Studies, Spanish, and Music Industry. After gaining his newfound knowledge as well as experience from college, Rez-E is ready to take on the industry one mix at a time.

George Garcia | Thursday Dec 2 at Glow @ Lima

From NY to DC nightlife, but he didn’t have to take the Chinatown bus. George Garcia arrived at GWU in 2006 on the back of a business degree, a pair of cleats and a mixer. He took no time in diving into the local house circuit, spinning at K Street Lounge, Eyebar, Lotus, Five and Indebleu. Within two years he found himself running parallel with those Chinatown buses, working residencies in NY at Azza Lounge and D’or as well as spinning here in The District. It was around that time he hung up the cleats and let the bass take over. 2009 saw George spinning everything from a Playboy fashion show to a US Tennis Association after party. He spun celebrity parties for everyone; Wimer Valderamma to Wu-Tang; Sean Kingston to Ovechkin.

His style? Tribal house with a flare for pop. His latest mix, ‘oE Summer Prescription’ contains tracks by Swedish House Mafia, Afrojack, Avicii, David Guetta, Yves LaRock, Steve Aoki and more. Everything is layered over the hypnotic pulse of tribal beats.

This Thursday Garcia makes his debut at what is arguably the #1 dance music event in the world, Glow. Voted ‘Best New Venue of 2010’ by Armin van Buuren and David Guetta, Glow at Lima provides the ultimate back drop for George Garcia’s pulsing, crowd friendly, go-crazy beats. It’s about time George truly arrived in DC nightlife!!
