Mark Knight Glow Club Glow Washington DC Nightclubs

International DJ/Producer, Mark Knight is known by his empire label, Toolroom Records. The Toolroom has steadily grown immensely from 2004 and have added artists such as Fedde Le Grand, David Guetta, and Fatboy Slim over the years. Since then Toolroom has become the biggest, fastest selling label on Beatport with the help of dance act, Faithless in 2009. Mark remains a force to be reckoned with, as his abilities supercede the glorified title of “DJ.” He has taken on his calling on the business side as he spearheads Toolroom, taking it from Mainstead, UK and giving it a worldwide recognition in dance music.

Marks latest release, Stopover resulted from locking himself in the studio for 48 hours with Dragon (Dirty South), and out was birthed the February 17th track released on Beatport. Mark lets me know that the story behind the name Toolroom and its success, “I set up Toolroom Records with my brother back in 2004. I often have to pinch myself when I think of how it’s grown from a tool shed outside my parent’s house (hence Toolroom Records)- to where we are now as a business, with the caliber of artists we have signed to the label and the amount of people involved with Toolroom Knights.”

As momentum takes its course in hard work and dedication, so does recognition. Mark Knight received that in the form of his first Grammy nomination for his production work on the Black Eyed Peas album, E.N.D. Mark remains humble when asked about this colossal acknowledgment, “[The] hook up for the track came through David Guetta. We worked across the net and got the track finished. I couldn’t believe it when I found out we’d been nominated for a Grammy. Nothing has changed. But off the back of the Grammy nomination, there’s some more interesting projects in the pipeline.” Mark emphasizes the new projects that will be emerging and will include him, of course, his partner, Wolfgang Gartner, D. Ramirez and Dave Spoon. The kicker happens to be the Mark Knight touch to a remix he is doing for Ginuwine, Timbaland and Missy Elliot!

Outside of that, Mark Knight has a few surprises that you will hear during the Winter Music Conference. All I could get out of Mark is it’s for mega acts, Underworld and Faithless. As he says, “It’s a bit hush, hush”, but I guarantee you will hear those tracks in his sets. The full Toolroom squad will be playing at the Terrace at Space on Friday 26th. “D.Ramirez, me, Dave Spoon, Funkagenda and a very special ‘super styling’ guest” will be there. I am guessing Fedde Le Grand?

A man that wears many hats, Mark doesn’t seem like he sways far from his Gemini dualistic traits. Busy and on the go all the time, this DJ,”loves a good cup of English breakfast tea. Not very rocking roll” (he knows). As many artists like Mark, would like to come to DC more, “I’ve only played DC twice before and both times were really good. [I am] Looking forward to coming back to GLOW, it’s a cool club and the crowd is great.”

-Dee Sanae

Gareth Emery at Glow, Feb 13th!

Even though 2009 hit many hard with the recession, for Gareth Emery, last year proved to be most rewarding and satisfying. Gareth landed himself a nice spot at #9 on the DJ Mag Top 100 and spent more time at Beatport’s trance chart than any other artist. Gareth started at age four, playing the piano and rocked in bands from grade sixth to college, headlining for acts such as Oasis and Green Day in Southampton’s (UK) Joiners. When interviewed or written about, Gareth still carries association with trance. I had a chance to catch up with this young 30 year-old EDM star on his way back from his last gig in Seoul, Korea.

Steve Angello (Swedish House Mafia) to blow it up Saturday at Glow!

Nadastrom and Tittsworth throw down at GLOW at Fur Nightclub!

DC Locals Dave Nada and Matt Nordstrom team up to form the collective Nadastrom, a killer group thats on fire, tearing up the DC EDM scene. Their debut release, Pussy EP, fast became a bestseller in the tastemaker store on Beatport. In 2008, they were invited to sign to Dubsided, which really helped propel their career into high gear, getting themselves spots on BBC’s Radio One, invites to world tours, musical collaborations with established artists such as Kid Cudi, Nina Sky, and Pitbull. They are known for their super-high energy sets in hard electro and house that really is like unlike any other.
Tittsworth, also from DC, has also found his way into the international scene, playing gigs and concerts all over the world. His debut album 12 Steps received high praise from Billboard, BPM, Kiss, Radio 1, and Entertainment Times. Also on this album is the Nadastrom remix of Tittsworth’s original smash hit WTF.

Bob Sinclar LIVE @ GLOW - Jan 7 2010

In 2007, after the success of the albums “WESTERN DREAM” and “SOUNDZ OF FREEDOM” – the latter a compilation/DJ mix stuffed full of unreleased tracks – BOB SINCLAR decided to say goodbye to the Paris rat race and spend a year in Los Angeles to find the right inspiration for a new record. Once there, he came upon some folk-rock that he hadn’t heard before (America, Boz Scaggs, John Fogerty, Michael McDonald, Dan Fogelberg). The events leading up to Born In 69 (his new album, out 11th May) had been set in motion.
After having prepared a dozen instrumental tracks between September 2007 and March 2008, Bob then left for Jamaica, where – despite a really nasty fever that hit him just when he arrived in Kingston – he recorded a number of singers such as Christopher Martin, Tony Rebel and Queen Ifrica. Back in LA, a few demos were already finished: good vibes, great vocals, some of them really great actually, but still nothing to put shivers down you back like “Love Generation” or “World Hold On”, still not quite the unremitting beat of “Rock this Party” or “Sound of Freedom”. Only once he had returned to Paris to record some music with his trusty team – especially sound engineer and co-producer Cutee B – was Bob Sinclar finally able to sort out the pieces of the puzzle.
“At that point, I went back to the tracks I’d recorded in LA and polished them up. Then I called Steve Edwards who came to Paris in October, took a sample from Richie Havens “We Are Everything“ (a sort of psychedelic song with a Beatles-style sitar) and another from a track by Illusion released in 1969. Using a title with a tinge of flower power, “Peace Song”, the concept of the album started coming together.” Another crazy idea: making a daring blend of “Je ne t’aime plus” by Manu Chao and the voice of Shabba Ranks on a track called “Love You No More”. Manu Chao accepted being sampled and Shabba Ranks came (on time for once!) to the studio that Bob had rented at the end of 2008. Suffice to say, two miracles had come together.
Also in New York, the song that was soon to be chosen as the first single from Born In 69 was recorded: the legendary Sugarhill Gang – who released the legendary old school hit “Rappers Delight” in 1979 – accepted the offer of a collaboration with Bob Sinclar.
With a baseline concocted by Cutee B, MCs Wonder Mike and Master Gee rapped out in their unique trademark styles, accompanied by a killer hook inspired by a kid’s choir from a Kid Creole song!
And thus “LaLa Song” was in the can: a hybrid rap/dancefloor killer where new style meets old school. “Personally, I say ‘Bob Sinclar and Sugarhill Gang, they’re amazing!’ (laughs) I don’t know why, but right from the beginning I knew it would be great, and the day we recorded, Wonder Mike and Master Gee told me that they’ just come from CNN where they’d been invited for the 30 year anniversary of “Rappers’ Delight“! After a year of trying to make it come together, something magical had happened.”
And you can definitely feel it on this first single. A real party track, both vintage and modern, funky and pop. “I got the concept of Born In 69 by brainstorming around the theme of peace and love and flower power. My birthday is 10th May, and the album comes out on 11th May. It’s a great birthday present,” concludes DJ/producer Bob Sinclar.
With this decidedly fun and eclectic album just begging to be danced to, Bob Sinclar isn’t just celebrating his birthday, he’s sending his groove around the world to brighten up some dismal times.
